When looking at the duplicates they found around<br \/>\n400,000 duplicate files. Knowing that users aren\u2019t proactive about<br \/>\nmanaging files in their own shares or department shares, they<br \/>\nwanted to implement a solution that automatically moved data to<br \/>\nlower tier storage. They invested in a 20 TB Synology NAS<br \/>\n(cost around $3,000) that would serve as their archive for a long<br \/>\ntime to come.<br \/>\nThey implemented a simple stubbing policy to stub files older<br \/>\nthan 2 years for the top 10 file types to lower tier storage.<br \/>\nThe USGS is a science organization that provides impartial<br \/>\ninformation on the health of our ecosystems and environment,<br \/>\nthe natural hazards that threaten us, the natural resources we<br \/>\nrely on, the impacts of climate and land-use change, and the<br \/>\ncore science systems that help us provide timely, relevant, and<br \/>\nuseable information.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Solution<\/strong><br \/>\nU.S. Geological Survey\/photo by JLisamarie Windham-Myers , USGS<br \/>\nCredit: U.S. Geological Survey Department of the Interior\/USGS<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Results<\/strong><br \/>\nAfter implementing this policy they found an over 50 % reduction<br \/>\nin the size of their shares from 3 TB to around 1.2 TB. After this<br \/>\nreducion, their back-up window went to around 36 hours. It starts<br \/>\non Friday and finishes on Sunday morning. This allowed them to<br \/>\nbreath easier because they weren\u2019t concerned about conflicts with<br \/>\nusers hitting files on Monday and the back-up still running. They<br \/>\ndon\u2019t have to worry about limiting access to files and enjoy the<br \/>\nautomated approach file archiver offers.
